Lake Rotorua Recreation Gap Analysis

Xyst was commissioned by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council to provide a gap analysis of informal recreation provision in the Rotorua catchment. The analysis included a stocktake of current outdoor recreational facilities within the local area and identified gaps for potential development opportunities that would fit with the creation of a new regional park.

The gap analysis may inform decisions on the possible acquisition of a dairy farming property on the northwest or western side of Lake Rotorua for a regional park that would assist in improving the water quality of Lake Rotorua.

The work has primarily been a desktop study, drawing from information currently held within the Regional and District Council databases, on Rotorua District Council website and other external websites. District Council, Department of Conservation (DOC) and Trails Trust staff were interviewed, and several conversations were held with various recreational user groups or land managers. Site visits were undertaken to some recreation facilities to verify opportunities present.
